A couple of weeks ago, we received an email from a customer in Swansea named Mr M. He was concerned about a weed that was threatening to take over his lawn - here's the photo he sent us:
Mr M had noticed this weed before, but this year, it was appearing in far more spots - and in far greater quantities. The weed network had substantial roots that were proving difficult to pull out, and worryingly, weed control treatments didn't seem to be helping.
So Mr M contacted Lawn & Weed Expert with two questions: what was this stubborn weed, and was there anything we could do about it?
What was it?
The weed in Mr M's photo looks a little like water fern (Azolla filiculoides), but this invasive plant usually only appears on - you guessed it - water.
So it's more likely that the weed in question was Aphanes arvensis, commonly known as parsley piert. This is an annual weed that has been know to grow in a variety of different environments, including lawns.
Parsley piert forms a mat as it grows, and it can colonise a lawn quite rapidly if left untreated.
What did we do about it?
Since standard weed killers had already failed to rescue Mr M's lawn, we sent one of our weed control experts to apply a specialist herbicide that's only available to professionals like us.
Did it work? Well, we received another email from Mr M a few days later, and here's what he had to say:
"Whatever your man put on the lawn yesterday has been amazingly effective. Today, only 24 hours after the application, I could find no sign of the live weed, and only the slightest traces of where it had been. There isn't even anything to rake out." - Mr M, Swansea
