The key to a healthy, green lawn all year round is to plan your lawn care in advance. Since we're about to start a new year, now is the perfect time to sit down and create your schedule. A bit of forward-thinking now will save you a lot of hassle in the future, so, here are our top tips for planning your 2021 lawn care schedule.
The first few months of the year
The first few months of the year are always cold, damp and sometimes snowy! That's because New Year falls in the middle of the winter lawn care period. This is a particularly challenging time for your lawn, so once you've slept off your New Year's day hangover, it's time to turn your attention to your garden.
The three main jobs you need to do are:
- Clearing fallen leaves
- Aerating to prevent waterlogging
- Fertilising to put nutrients back into the soil

When spring arrives
You'll be pleased to know that once the bleakness of winter passes, there is a light at the end of the tunnel - springtime! This is probably your lawn's favourite time of year because there's more sunlight and more nutrients available to sustain a rapid period of growth.
It's also a lovely time to be out in the garden, flowers start to bloom and garden visitors like birds and butterflies start to emerge. For your spring lawn care, the jobs you need to do are:
- Pest control
- Mowing at least once a week
- Top Dressing to improve the quality of your soil
- Overseeding to improve the density of the grass
- Aerating to loosen soil and allow nutrients to penetrate deeper
- Scarifying to remove moss and thatch
- Removing weeds

Summer 2021
Summer might seem a long way away now, but it will creep up on us very quickly. Again, having a lawn care schedule prepared for this period will help you stay on top of your garden maintenance. If we're lucky, summer will bring lots of sunshine. This can, however, put extra strain on your lawn.
During particularly hot summers, your lawn might experience a drought, so it's important you look after it by:
- Mowing
- Watering
- Eradicating pests

Transitioning into autumn
Once summer is over, we'll be back into the autumn months where the days get shorter, colder and things in the garden start to die back. It's normal for your lawn to look a little lacklustre through the autumn and winter months, but there are things you can do to make sure it looks fresh and healthy again in the spring.
We'd recommend planning in the following jobs:
- Mowing on a longer setting so you don't take too much length off
- Overseeding to strengthen grass
- Aerating to relieve surface water, autumn is often the wettest time of year!
- Moss control
- Disease protection to prevent red thread, mould and other diseases developing in your lawn
