Winter Lawn Care Advice

Rake up Leaves and Debris

In the winter months, debris such as fallen leaves can quickly accumulate on your lawn. Periodically sweeping up this debris can help to prevent the build up of moisture that encourages lawn diseases and unwanted pest activity.

Aeration

During the winter months, the soil beneath your lawn can become compacted. This can be a particularly damaging problem in winter because it prohibits water and nutrients from reaching the roots of your lawn. As you know, nutrients are scarce during winter, so to give your lawn the best chance of thriving, you really need to aerate the soil.

If you plan to do this yourself, we'd recommend purchasing a pair of aeration spikes that can be attached to the base of your shoes. Alternatively get in touch with our team! We have professional machinery that can aerate your entire lawn in a fraction of the time.

Moss Control

Moss can be a real pain in the winter months, if you've encountered it before you'll notice it can crop up pretty much anywhere! When it grows in amongst your lawn it can smother the grass and deprive it of moisture and nutrients. The best way to get rid of moss to improve your lawn's health is to treat it with a targeted moss killer. Once this has had a chance to work, you follow up with a scarification treatment to remove the dead material.

Scarification

In autumn, you might notice a buildup of dead organic material in your lawn. If you leave this on your lawn throughout winter, it will dramatically impact the health of your lawn. The process required to remove this buildup is called scarification. Traditionally, people would scarify their lawns using a metal rake, but removing all the thatch and moss from your lawn by hand is a lengthy process! We have a professional scarification tool that can remove debris from your lawn easily.

Disease Protection

During summer, you won't see many lawn diseases because your grass is healthy and the sun help keep it dry. In winter, however, your grass is much weaker and more susceptible to diseases. Wet, dark conditions are ideal for fungus and other lawn diseases to grow.

If you want to keep your lawn healthy in winter, we'd recommend keeping your eye out for the first signs of disease and treating them quickly. Lawn diseases are prone to spreading quickly if they're left untreated, so you risk the health of your entire lawn if you don't catch diseases early.

Don't worry, we have a team of technicians who are trained to deal with a whole host of lawn diseases. You can find out more about our disease protection service below.
