Weeds can conquer a lawn very rapidly. It doesn't take years and years of neglect for weeds to get a foot in the door; even very house-proud people who take excellent care of their lawns will occasionally find unwanted plants growing amid the grass.
If you haven't been keeping on top of your weeds - to the point where your lawn is now more weed than grass - then restoring your overrun garden to its former glory may seem like a hopeless task. But it is possible to fix a lawn that's mostly weeds and take steps to ensure that it won't happen again.
First, kill the weeds...
It's sometimes sufficient to just dig up the weeds or pull them out by hand, but this is hard work and the weeds will come right back if you're not taking care to remove the entire plant.
For example, dandelions have a very long tap root that must be completely removed from the soil in order to prevent regrowth.
This isn't to say that digging up your weeds isn't a viable option, but herbicides tend to be more reliable and require less manual labour. Selective herbicides are preferable, as these will combat your lawn weeds without harming the grass itself.
If your weeds are particularly resilient and/or numerous, you should consider calling in a weed control specialist like Lawn & Weed Expert. For example, a homeowner in Swansea recently asked us to tackle a particularly stubborn weed that was popping up all over his lawn; shop-bought weed killers had already failed to do the trick, but we successfully eradicated the weed using specialist herbicides that are only available to professionals.
"Whatever your man put on the lawn yesterday has been amazingly effective. Today, only 24 hours after the application, I could find no sign of the live weed, and only the slightest traces of where it had been." - Mr M, Swansea

...then make sure your lawn won't be overrun again!
Destroying your garden weeds is all well and good, but the fight doesn't end there. Once your lawn is weed-free, you should take steps to make sure that those pesky weeds don't come back.
The best way to keep weeds at bay is to ensure that your lawn is healthy enough to hold them off. Here's what we recommend:
- Lawn feed - Fertiliser promotes strong, healthy grass growth and helps your lawn to resist weed growth.
- Careful mowing - It's important to mow your lawn regularly, but try not to cut the grass too short as this will make it easier for weeds to take hold. Be sure follow the 1/3 rule: never cut off more than a third of the grass's height in a single mowing session.
- Overseeding - Adding new grass seed to your lawn every few years keeps the grass from thinning out and ensures that weeds have no room to thrive.
