Gardens sell houses - at least, that's what new research from Rightmove says.
As a general rule, properties with gardens have always been worth more than those without, but this is truer than ever right now. Thanks to the events of the past few months, demand for outdoor space has soared to an unprecedented high.
Many Brits spent spring 2020 indoors due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and the 'stay at home' rules that were put in place to slow the virus down.
For obvious reasons, this lockdown made many garden-less people long for a private outdoor space to call their own. Rightmove's report claims that demand for studio flats has plummeted in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, and property experts are now advising sellers to put special emphasis on the garden when taking photos for marketing purposes.
What else does Rightmove's research say?
Here are some more key findings from Rightmove's survey of over four thousand 'home-movers':
- Significantly more buyers and renters are searching for properties with gardens
- 'Bigger garden or access to one' was the most commonly-cited priority among both buyers and renters
- Many people are willing to accept longer commutes if it means living in an affordable property with a garden
Thinking of selling your property?
If you are planning to put your house on the market, this increased desire for outdoor living space means that it's more important than ever to get your garden in tip-top condition before you proceed.
This may simply mean power-washing your patio or tidying up the toys your children like to leave outside. But if you have a lawn outside your home, we strongly recommend investing in a specialist lawn treatment before you put your house up for sale.
