What is overseeding?
Overseeding is the process of sowing new lawn seeds over your existing lawn. This method is widely used to thicken and strengthen your lawn - the best defence against weeds is thick, healthy grass. As such, new seed should be introduced to your lawn regularly to replace the ageing plants. Choosing to overseed your lawn has all kinds of benefits, the most prominent being that it can be carried out without you needing to rip up and replace large areas of your existing turf!
If you want your lawn to stay thick and dense, we recommend overseeding at least once every 3 years. Overseeding should be carried out in either autumn or late winter or early spring, ideally after scarification, aeration or top dressing have already taken place. For the best results, use a variety of different seed species.

- Don’t sow your new seeds in cold weather. Seeds require a ground temperature above 8 °C to germinate, and shoots need several weeks without frost if they are to survive.
- Hot and dry summer weather isn’t good for overseeding either. Seeds need good soil contact, warmth and moisture – so spring and autumn are ideal germination times.
- Aerating / spiking your lawn before overseeding will assist seed germination.
